The Queen meets Gurkha VC. Queen Elizabeth II of England chats with veterans of the Gurkha Rifles, a British crack regiment of the Second World War enlisted from among the Gurkhas of Nepal, during her visit to the jungle town of Pokhara in Nepal on 28 February. Third from right is Lal Bahador Thapa, Gurkha winner of the Victoria Cross,Britain's highest award for gallantry in battle, who was among the 212 veterans who lined up for informal inspection. He won the Victoria Cross in the North African desert in 1943. The Queen and Prince Philip were paying a royal visit to Nepal
