Queen's 1979 Tour of The Gulf: Bahrain: The Grand Old Lady of the Gulf, where oil was discovered in 1930's, greeted the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh when they arrived in the Royal Yacht Britannia from Kuwait on the second stage of their three week tour of the Middle East. Attired in a cool ice blue silk coat the Queen was greeted by the Emir of Bahrain. Picture shows: Wearing elaborate white robes smothered in gold, and carrying a magnificent scimitar, Sheik Isa Bin Sulman Al-Khalifa, Emir of Bahrain, welcomes the Queen who has just received a bouquet of flowers

Prince Charles before flying a Tiger Moth biplane
Royal Air Force [RAF] Benson, Oxfordshire. Prince Charles, wearing a biggles-style flying outfit which he said had been dug out of a museum especially for the occasion, at Royal Air Force [RAF] Benson in Oxfordshire today after fulfilling a private ambition by flying in a pre-war Tiger Moth biplane (behind). The Prince, who was accompanied by Royal Air Force Cranwell instructor Flight Lieutenant John Hardie, demonstrated his skill as a pilot by taking the controls of the 44 year old plane for more than an hour. As well as take off and landing he completed a number of aerial manoeuvres

Off Southsea, Hampshire. Prince Charles in diving gear today when he went 40 feet beneath the choppy seas of the Solent to inspect a ship that was once a flagship in King Henry VIII's navy. The Prince made two 30 minute dives on the wreck of the Mary Rose, one and a half miles off Southsea. It is the second time the Prince, who is President of the Mary Rose Trust formed to excavate the ship which sunk in a battle with the French fleet in 1545, has dived to the wreck

Prince Charles strolls through Cowdray Park with Sabrina Guinness
Prince Charles shows his girl to the world. Prince Charles threw Royal traditions to the winds on Sunday and showed off his latest girlfriend. And speculators on the royal marriage market said there was meaning to the move. He had earlier tried to keep his country weekend with banking heiress Sabrina Guinness a secret, although she had been watching him play polo at Cowdray Park, on Friday and Saturday (4 and 5 August 1979). But when the couple returned to watch an evening match on Sunday, Charles decided to 'go public'. He and 24 year old Sabrina mingled with spectators, walked together over the playing area and sat side by side in the public stands. An experienced Royal observer said "I was amazed. It would seem that they are more than just good friends"
