The Queen Mother has always been famous for her millinery and in this July 1947 library picture she wears a striking toque, in grey felt, decorated all round the high brim with clipped ostrich feathers, finished off with a felt bow on the right side. The occasion was as Queen Elizabeth she attended a St James's Palace garden party in aid of the British Empire Nurses War Memorial Fund

Now, the portrait is among the paintings and drawings the Queen Mother has loaned to an exhibition celebrating her birthday.
