The collection encompasses extensive correspondence and draft poetry and is an example of the creative processes writers undertake from idea to composition to finished piece. The collection is comprised of paper-based documents and new accessions are occasionally received from U A’s partner Rosie Bailey

Queen Victoria

A rarely seen photograph of the Queen Victoria, from the archives of Bassano, one of the world's oldest photographic studios. It was taken in 1882; in the background is a painting of Prince Albert, Queen Victoria's "dear one", who died in December 1861. Queen Victoria was born in May 1819 she succeeded to the throne in June 1837 and reigned for 63 years, until her death in January 1901. During her reign the British Empire reached its apogee

The Artists’ Books Collection was established in 1998 following the exhibition Books As Art held at Cheltenham Museum and Art Gallery, Cheltenham Town Hall and the Cheltenham and Gloucester College of Higher Education’s Pittville Campus

Artists’ Books are created by fine artists and are also known as book art or bookworks. They come in all shapes and sizes, covering diverse topics from Trump to the Trojan War. They can use traditional book bindings or other material, and are often published in small or even single editions

Our collection includes works by Andrew Bick, Melanie Council, Ian Hamilton Finlay, Hamish Fulton, Robert Lax, Chris Ophili, Terry Smith and Andy Warhol

King George V and the Duke of Clarence
